More shade, more wildlife habitats and greener neighbourhoods: Luxembourg has launched “Planzen fir d’Zukunft”, a national campaign targeting 1.7 million additional trees by 2030.
Announced on 22 October 2026, the initiative invites residents, municipalities, businesses and associations to contribute to Europe’s wider ambition of planting three billion additional trees this decade.
Plantings counted towards the European pledge must be voluntary, suited to local conditions and additional to legally required compensation. Participants are invited to register their trees through the European MapMyTree platform.
Following prolonged summer drought, authorities highlighted the pressure facing Luxembourg’s forests. Diverse tree species, appropriate soils and suitable genetic origins can help forests withstand heat, pests and disease.
In towns and villages, trees also provide cooling, support biodiversity, store carbon and help rainwater enter the ground.
At Save the Planet, we welcome the ambition. Its lasting value will depend on what happens after planting: careful maintenance, enough space for roots and protection through dry periods.
A tree planted today is a commitment to years of care. Success should mean healthy trees growing into the future, alongside the protection of those already standing.
